It all starts with a breath…

Light Picture

There are some who will tell you that the first thing we need is strength.

Respectfully, I beg to differ.

To be strong we need to be able to move. Uninhibited movement is essential. Without movement, strength is weak.

For movement we require structure, without it we become a slave to compensations as the body fights for balance. Every martial artist knows, to break structure, first we learn to create structure. Without structure, movement is weak.

To create structure we need to address posture, otherwise we are buidling on sand. Center of mass, base of support. Without posture, structure is weak.

For posture we must have mobility, mobility gives us the framework we need for physical integrity. Without mobility, posture is weak.

For mobility we need breath.  We must breathe, breathe in to our bodies, relax, find our centre.

From that center all things become possible.

It starts with the breath. Without breath, we are weak.

In the words of Thomas Myers, “To move with ease and imagination to the demands of our environment”, that is the challenge.
